Austria’s photovoltaic technology platform supports the adopted “Made-in-EU bonus”
The “Austrian Photovoltaic Technology Platform” expressly welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to introduce a bonus on European products in the field of photovoltaic components. This is a first step to emphasize the importance of the availability of European components.
Photovoltaics are on the way to becoming one of the most important forms of energy generation - globally, in Austria and in Europe. Currently, around 10% of the annual electricity generation in Austria is covered by photovoltaics; if the national climate targets are achieved, photovoltaics will cover over 30% of electricity consumption and around 15 to 20% of the country's total energy needs. This is shown by the figures from the BMK's integrated network infrastructure plan 2024. Other European countries are also aiming for similar levels.
Europe’s energy sovereignty is inviolable
It is therefore all the more important to ensure European sovereignty throughout the entire photovoltaic value chain. Due to their cost structures, Chinese products in the field of photovoltaic components have made a significant contribution to driving forward the expansion of PV in Europe, and especially in Austria. However, the current, extremely heterogeneous cost structure also reflects the different political framework conditions and the incomparable ecological, social and ethnic standards in these two regions of the world.
Dependencies in the area of critical infrastructure or energy sources should be avoided in the future. Europe's energy sovereignty must be understood as an inviolable value. Photovoltaics is an important technology for providing energy worldwide and will very likely be the most important in the future. The strategic importance of research and the manufacturing industry along the PV value chain as the backbone of every economic power is obvious. The developments in China and the USA make it clear how important photovoltaics are.
An increased awareness of quality and individuality as well as the high value of European PV components is equally important in order to achieve the goal of rebuilding a continuous European value chain in the field of photovoltaics.
Austrian PV industry at the forefront internationally
Austria has some excellent companies in the field of PV component production. They manufacture subcomponents for photovoltaic modules, inverters and other system components or are producers of standard and special modules, substructures and various other components for photovoltaic systems. In addition, the domestic photovoltaic research scene is excellently positioned internationally.
The EU bonus now planned is a first important milestone and positions Austria, alongside Italy, as a European pioneer in measures to promote the expansion of a European photovoltaic industry.

About the Austrian Photovoltaic Technology Platform
The association “Technologieplattform Photovoltaik Austria” was founded in May 2012 as a joint initiative of companies producing photovoltaics in Austria and the relevant Austrian research institutions. Innovation and research for the domestic photovoltaics industry are to be optimized in order to increase Austria’s share of value added in the global photovoltaics market.
